Have you ever wanted to travel in Central America but thought you just could not afford the expense? Central America is made up of a historically and culturally fascinating group of countries. Prices associated with travel are often less expensive than what is typically expected. Even with these low costs in mind there are general secrets to budget traveling. Here is a list of some budget travel tips that allow for both travel and savings.

Transportation:

Most people, while traveling through Central America, use taxis, tour buses, and/or hired cars. While theses are usually reliable resources of transportation, they can often be expensive. Most tourists stay away from the local, public transportation system. Perhaps many tourists feel intimidated by language barriers, rumors they have heard about safety, or various other aspects of travel and the unknown. However, public transportation methods are often readily available, sufficiently safe, and super affordable. Never mind the opportunity that using the public transportation system allows you to interact face to face with local culture. One could easily talk to tourist boards, other travelers that have used the transportation system, or read travel guide books to learn about how the local transportation system works, tips for safe traveling, prices, locations, accessibility as well as adventurous opportunities that are available while using public transportation in said countries.

Food:

Eating the food in foreign countries is often one quick way to get to know a different culture. However, many times it is also one quick way to know your medicine cabinet as well! How to eat culturally diverse cuisine and be safe and save money is not an impossible feat. There are numerous sources of information (websites, country specific books, tour guides etc.) that can tell a traveler what is safe to eat, and how to be safe while eating. With those facts in mind one can shop in grocery stores and cook their own meals, or eat at small informal restaurants that serve local cuisine at budget prices. Another great way to save money and eat in a safe and culturally interesting manner would be to sign up for a homestay program where meals are provided. Then you could eat all the cultural cuisine you could handle in a safe and family environment!

Lodging:

There are various forms of inexpensive lodging available throughout Central America. One that would also be linked to providing food as well as lodging would be homestay programs. Homestay programs are often available through language schools, tourist agencies, and educational travel programs. These programs are usually very affordable and hassle free, as they provide food AND lodging! There are also a number of hostels and hotels that are listed in tour books and travel logs through out the Internet and Book shops (etc.) that are affordable and often are clean, safe, and provide some sort of food option with the lodging they offer.

Lastly, one of the best ways to travel exotically and affordably through Central America is by talking to other travelers. Getting first hand advice while you are traveling is the best way to find out about current deals, what the going prices are, and what can be expected in terms of food, lodging, and transportation.
